Oil Barons Charity Ball 2011 pledges commitment to FOCP

Charity---Oil-Barons-Charity-Ball---OBBTHE Oil Barons Charity Ball, the region’s largest industry social event, will this year raise much-needed funds for the Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP) charity, while also naming this year’s winner of the coveted ‘Oil Baron 2011’ title.

Now in its ninth year, the annual gala dinner, this year themed ‘Everybody needs somebody’, will be held under the stars at its new location, Meydan Racecourse, Dubai on November 18, 2011. Guests can look forward to a spectacular lineup of live entertainment from the Blues Brothers Tribute Show featuring performances from Aretha Franklin and James Brown acts.

Hosted by Pipeline Magazine and DMG Energy, the Ball will again call upon the generosity of the region’s energy sector in support of patients and their families in the UAE who have been affected by cancer. has raised more than AED 1.4 million for the charity.

“Oil Barons Charity Ball has now become a must-attend event and a key component of the CSR programs of DMG and our participating sponsors, and through their ongoing support we expect to reach our ambitious Dh1 million target this year,” said Simon Mellor, Senior VP – Energy at dmg::events.

The Ball has raised almost Dh1.5 million durings its two year association with FOCP, a charitable, volunteer-based foundation and part of the Sharjah’s Supreme Council for Family Affairs. FOCP provides vital support to the UAE’s cancer patients, along with awareness and early-prevention campaigns.

“Between 2008 and 2009, the event actually contributed 80 per cent of the total funds for our charity,” said HE Miss Ameera bin Karam, President Board of Trustees (Founding Member) of the FOCP. “I really cannot over-emphasise the importance of the Oil Barons Charity Ball to this charity.”

As tradition dictates, the event also sees the naming of the Oil Baron for 2011, with the coveted title awarded to a top industry executive who has positively impacted the Middle East’s energy sector through their exceptional leadership, business acumen and social contribution.

Previous Oil Barons are not only exceptional industry leaders, but also recognise the importance of supporting the communities in which they operate. As an example, incumbent 2010 Oil Baron, Mr Kevin Roberts from Hydroserv Group, is a major charity supporter and at the 2009 Oil Barons Charity Ball donated AED 100,000 to FOCP, in addition to providing a car for an FOCP patients.
